Background of the Study: Amputation, whether due to trauma, medical conditions, or congenital reasons, leads to significant functional impairments that affect individuals' mobility, self-care, and overall independence. Rehabilitation after amputation is crucial for improving functional independence, and nurse-led rehabilitation programs have the potential to significantly enhance patient outcomes. In Benue State, where healthcare infrastructure is often limited, amputee patients face challenges in accessing specialized rehabilitation services, which are essential for regaining functionality (Okpe & Chia, 2024). Nurses, particularly those in rehabilitation and community health settings, play a central role in supporting patients’ recovery and reintegration into society through tailored rehabilitation programs that address both physical and psychological aspects of recovery.

Rehabilitation for amputee patients involves physical therapy, prosthetic training, psychological support, and the development of adaptive strategies for daily living activities (Eze & Olofin, 2025). Nurse-led interventions in Benue State hospitals are seen as a key solution for improving functional outcomes among amputee patients. Nurses provide care that not only focuses on the physical aspects of rehabilitation but also addresses the emotional and social needs of patients. However, despite the recognized importance of these programs, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurse-led rehabilitation interventions for amputee patients in the state. This study will explore the impact of nurse-led rehabilitation programs on the functional independence of amputee patients and assess the barriers and enablers to effective rehabilitation within the context of Benue State hospitals.

Statement of the Problem: Amputee patients often face challenges in regaining functional independence, leading to a reduced quality of life. In Benue State hospitals, the lack of specialized rehabilitation programs, coupled with limited resources and professional training, may hinder effective recovery for amputee patients. This study aims to evaluate the role of nurse-led rehabilitation programs in improving functional independence among amputee patients and to identify factors that affect the success of these programs.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led rehabilitation programs in improving functional independence in amputee patients in Benue State hospitals.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in implementing rehabilitation programs for amputee patients.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurse-led rehabilitation programs to improve functional independence among amputee patients.

Research Questions:

  1. How do nurse-led rehabilitation programs impact functional independence in amputee patients in Benue State hospitals?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in implementing rehabilitation programs for amputee patients in Benue State hospitals?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of nurse-led rehabilitation programs for amputee patients in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led rehabilitation programs significantly improve the functional independence of amputee patients in Benue State hospitals.
  2. The lack of training, resources, and professional support significantly limits the success of nurse-led rehabilitation programs for amputee patients.
  3. Nurses' involvement in both physical and psychological rehabilitation is positively correlated with improved functional independence for amputee patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of nurse-led rehabilitation programs in Benue State hospitals. Limitations include a potential lack of standardized rehabilitation programs across hospitals, as well as challenges in assessing the full range of functional independence outcomes.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Amputee rehabilitation: A process of helping individuals who have undergone amputation regain their physical, psychological, and functional independence through various therapeutic interventions.
  • Functional independence: The ability of an individual to perform activities of daily living (such as dressing, eating, bathing, and mobility) without assistance.
  • Nurse-led rehabilitation programs: Rehabilitation interventions that are planned, directed, and implemented by nurses, focusing on the physical and psychological needs of the patient.
